Seven Americans get a stroke every 5 minutes!
This equates to about 2000 Americans getting a stroke every single day. A stroke is what some medics call a brain attack.
PROBIOTIC BACTERIA AFFECT BRAIN HEALTH
The most common type of stroke, "ischaemic stroke" blocks the supply of blood to a specific region of the brain. This kills brain cells as these cells do not get oxygen.
As we all know, a serious stroke affects other parts of the body which can cause major disabilities. Recently, a new study revealed that bacteria living in your gut can affect the severity of a stroke episode.
Weill Cornell Medical College, have been able to show that the type of probiotic bacteria in ones colon will determine how the immune system will react to the stroke. These world class scientists believe that there is an interaction between the bacteria in the gut with the immune system. They also believe that the interaction can affect the severity of the after effect of the stroke.
THE BACTERIA IN THE GUT ALTER THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
The researchers showed that the severity of the stroke damage was dependent on the population of the intestinal bacteria. They showed that they could reduce the stroke damage by 60% by just changing the type of bacteria in the gut.
“Our experiment shows a new relationship between the brain and the intestine,” says researcher Josef Anrather, who is a lecturer neuroscience at Cornell. “The intestinal microbiota shape stroke outcome, which will impact how the medical community views stroke and defines stroke risk"
Costantino Iadecola, director of the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine. also noted that “One of the most surprising findings was that the immune system made strokes smaller by orchestrating the response from outside the brain, like a conductor who doesn’t play an instrument himself but instructs the others, which ultimately creates music,”.
AVOID A STROKE BY PROMOTING YOUR GUT HEALTH
These researchers showed from they study that the type of food is important in lowering your risk for stroke.
STEPS TO REDUCE STROKE WITH PROBIOTICS
1. consume fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kim chi, kefir, yogurt and pickled vegetables. They help promote probiotic bacteria in the gut.
2. Eat fruits and vegetables that help probiotics in your gut.
3 Take probiotic supplements.
4. Avoid antibiotics as they kill your gut bacteria. Only take them when absolutely necessary
